Breast Reconstruction in Albuquerque

Breast reconstruction surgery is a procedure to restore the shape of the breasts after a mastectomy. This surgery can be performed using implants or your own tissue, and a plastic surgeon usually performs breast reconstruction surgery.

If you are considering breast reconstruction surgery, you must talk to your doctor about your options. There are different types of breast reconstruction surgery, each with advantages and disadvantages. You and your doctor will work together to decide which type of surgery is right for you.

Types Of Breast Reconstruction Surgery

There are two main types of breast reconstruction surgery: implant-based surgery and autologous (using your own tissue) surgery.

Implant-based breast reconstruction:
With this type of surgery, an implant is used to create a new breast mound. The implant may be placed under or over the chest muscle. Implant-based reconstruction is often performed in two stages with a temporary tissue expander placed initially and exchanged for a permanent implant 3 months later. Based on your cancer surgery and your anatomy, this can sometimes be done in one stage.

Autologous (using your own tissue) breast reconstruction:
With this type of surgery, tissue is taken from another part of your body and used to create a new breast mound.

The most common type of autologous surgery is the pedicled TRAM or DIEP flap. This surgery uses skin, fat, and muscle from your lower belly to create a new breast.

How Breast Reconstruction Surgery Works

Both types of surgery require multiple operations. The first operation is called a mastectomy. This operation removes breast cancer. The second operation is the reconstruction surgery. This is the operation to create the new breast mound. These are often performed at the same time.

You may need to have additional surgery to improve the appearance of the new breast mound. For example, you may need a nipple-areola complex reconstruction or a breast lift.

It is important to remember that breast reconstruction surgery is a complex operation. Breast reconstruction surgery is not for everyone. You should talk to your doctor about all of your options and ask any questions that you have before making a decision.
